29. The Nativity of Christ

Description:
In the centre is the scene of the Nativity of Christ, shown in a cave located in a mountainous landscape, based on the apocryphal Gospel of James.

The Mother of God lies on a red coloured pillow and she turns slightly away from her new-born Child, lying in the manger behind her. The ox and the donkey are depicted next to the manger. In the upper left corner are two angels. On the right are two shepherds, addressed by an angel above. On the left, the three wise men (Magi) kneel to offer their gifts to the Child.

Below, on the right, women prepare a bath for the ritual first washing of the new-born Child. To the left, Joseph sits lost in thought. An old man addresses him. This figure is interpreted in different ways. He may be a re-assuring presence, telling Joseph that the prophecies are now fulfilled. He can also be regarded as the personification of doubt, trying to tempt Joseph to doubt the virgin birth of Christ.
