Description:
The feast day of the Ascension of Christ is celebrated 40 days after Easter.

Icons of the Ascension of Christ have a composition in two parts: an upper, heavenly half showing Christ ascending on the cloud, and a lower earthly half with the apostles and the Mother of God.

Christ is depicted in a mandorla carried by two angels. The heavenly scene is dynamic, with the ascending Christ and winged angels. It contrasts with the static poise of those remaining behind on earth. The Mother of God, accepting the departure of her Son, is the centre of a symmetrical composition, flanked by two angels: she symbolises the Church on Earth.
